The United States of America accepted Taiwan into its Visa Waiver Program (VWP) on November 1, 2012. On November 1, 2012, Taiwanese citizens with a valid, machine-readable passport with their National Identification Number were allowed to travel to the United States for business or tourism purposes. They can also visit the United States for up to 90 days without needing a visa.
Taiwanese citizens must apply for the ESTA to be admitted into the U.S. as part of the Visa Waiver Program. ESTA stands for Electronic System of Travel Authorization. It was launched in 2009 by the United States Department of Homeland Security. Online applications are possible. The ESTA is valid for two years and can be used to make multiple trips to the U.S.
